Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti or Vesak. This is a Buddhist festival. This festival marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautam Buddha. Festival holds special significance and celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Buddha Purnima is an important festival in the Buddhist tradition, celebrated throughout South, Southeast and East Asia.

Followers of Hinduism and Buddhism celebrate Buddha Purnima, marking the day Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment, leading to his transformation into Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

There is a Hindu belief that on this day Lord Vishnu took his 9th incarnation as Buddha.

  • fasting: On this day, people observe fasts, prepare kheer prasad, or break their fasts by consuming kheer. Temples of Buddhism are adorned beautifully, and prayers are conducted therein.
  • workship place & Celebration:At dawn, people congregate at the worship place for prayers or dances, embellishing Buddhist temples and observing prayers all day.
  • Flag hosting: After sunrise, the Buddha flag is hoisted at the puja place. This flag can be blue, white, yellow or orange in color. Red color indicates blessings, white color indicates purity, orange color indicates wisdom and yellow color indicates avoidance of difficult situations.
  • Decor house: Some people celebrate this festival by liberating the free birds in the cage. On this day people of Buddhist religion decorate their houses with lamps. Followers of Buddhism from all over the world come to Bodh Gaya and pray.
  • Bodhi tree workship:People worship the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, adorning its branches with flowers and pouring milk and scented water onto its vines. They abstain from non-vegetarian food and donate clothes, food, etc., to the poor.
  • Ash poojan: On this day, the Delhi Museum opens its doors to Buddhist followers who take out and worship the ashes of Buddha.
